QWU® premiered in Auckland on Saturday 18 September 2004. The musical parody on a beauty pageant, now in its 6th year, has donated over $145,000 for HIV/AIDS causes in New Zealand whilst entertaining the audiences in what has become a must see annual event on the Auckland event calendar. The basis of the event is a beauty pageant with a difference where most but not all of the cast are boys dressed as girls, all with one mission, to receive the coveted crown. Act One The first act, a spoof on Miss World, features all the 'girls' opening the show with a song and dance extravaganza. This theratical opening is followed by the contestants parading in 'headgear of nations' on the QWU 'cat'walk. The 'girls & boy's eagerly await the announcement of the special awards: Miss Congeniality, Miss Pins & Needles, Miss Beauty with a Purpose and Mr Toned QWU boy followed by the announcement of the semi-finalists who will proceed to the rigors of act two. Act Two Act two concentrates solely on the finalists who compete in two categories; special catwalk parade with interview and the artistic/talent performance section featuring their countries music, colours and culture. The show concludes with the presentation of the crown to the ultimate winner. Sounds like a recipe for disaster with that number of drag queens or is it QWU ® - Queen of the Whole Universe'. |
